Critical Literacy Class.

Monday,

11.01.2010

Critical Literacy was the first class that I attend for this semester. It is a compulsory subject for student in semester 4 to take it. Mr Kamaraziz will be the one who going to teach my class this subject. In the first class, Mr Kamaraziz has explained to us about what is critical literacy and I found it rather interesting. I look forward for this class and I cannot wait to learn something new as this is a new subject for me. A brief look at the subject title, at first I thought that we are going to study in depth about the literature. Well my guess was wrong at least that is what I think. We are going to study many type of text, movie and etc in order for us to think critically.

I have done some research about Critical Literacy in Google and I have found many articles about it. Each one of it has different meaning but I can conclude that Critical Literacy is the combination of critical thinking and how we response to a text. It involves analysis and critique when reading a text to understand the meaning lies beneath the written, visual, spoken, multimedia and a lot more. Critical thinking is crucial when taking the subject Critical Literacy in fact it is needed to be practice by people in this rapid and fast develop world. Critical thinking requires a person to use both brain rather than only one side of the brain. It is to balance the response that one person will show. It is because, when a person only use one brain they will have the tendency to judge a story or a person either it is base on their experience or emotional.

Critical thinking is discovered by Socrates. He discovered it by questioning that the people in the ancient Greek that solely believe in the “authority” statement that they called knowledge without asking question and think in depth about it. He has enlighten the people to seek for evidence, make assumption and reason before accepted something as a “knowledge”. Socrates’ practice has been followed by Plato, Aristotle and the Greek skeptics.

The second class of critical literacy, I learn about superstitions. I learn so enormous things in the class that interest me on continue on searching about the topic that I learn in class. In the second class, Mr. Kamaraziz taught us to critical thinking about the superstitions, for example, if a girl sing in the kitchen, she will marry to an old man. In order to come out with a good critical response, ones must use the rule of ten.
The rule of ten are:

1.Topic
2.Content
3.Source
4.Audience
5.The rhetorical function
6.Purpose
7.Perspective
8.Positioning
9.Impact
10.Visual literacy

After that Mr.Kamaraziz asked us to come with a mnenomic device where it could help us remember the rule of ten easily and more effective and he wants it in his next class. At the moment he ask us to do it, I have come out with a sentence but it is in bahasa that is "Tia Cari Saya Ari Rabu lepas?Pia Pegi Pasar Ikan dengan Vellu". My friend said, it is funny and I prefer it is funny due to the human nature that love funny and cute things so it makes me easier to remember the rule of ten and I will present it on my next critical litercy class.
